Repair of large bone defects is a crucial medical challenge and tissue engineering is a promising alternative to autologous bone graft while many crucial barriers must be overcome for full therapeutic translation. Our research seeks to develop novel biomaterials, drug delivery, and stem cell-based techniques to improve challenged bone (e.g. aged, inflamed, or irradiated bone defects) regeneration by mimicking the natural bone healing process. Our long-term goal is to develop innovative translational strategies to improve craniofacial bone regeneration by harnessing endogenous signals and reparative cells (autotherapies).
