Work in my laboratory is focused on understanding how the gene ISM1, which we identified as a novel clefting locus, helps pattern the face. We have found that ISM1 is required for proper cranial neural crest cell migration, whereby its knockdown leads to an expansion of SNAI2-positive cells thus suggesting that ISM1 may be regulating the transition of the neural crest to a fully migratory state.
